I saw that recently. Unfortunately for now the answer is "no idea" or more realistically, probably not.

Posting in that folder on DF usually gets me into some sort of trouble though, so if you want to direct them to this thread, or pass the message along, it might be better. Happy

I don't know why. IIRC, Gygax authored modules very often had lots of giant rats. Laughing

GT arcihve - what can be done?

I floated some ideas by Gary in email, thought I'd circulate them a bit more broadly to see if folks have other approaches to consider for fixing the archive:

MTG and I were discussing the GT archive last week while I was in CA visiting, and I thought it was worthwhile to have a follow-up discussion with you.

What is possible/feasible to do to build a new archive? IIRC, you have all of the emails from years back, right? So, all we need is some sort of db to store the emails, a schema to organize them (both db schema, and some sort of metadata to classify the articles), and an interface to search for and read the content.

If you can get me the content, I'll see what I can do to build out a Greyhawk subject matter taxonomy/ontology, and perhaps some sort of open source KB application (my boss recently mentioned an os KB in the .php/mySQL code set that apparently looked pretty good, so I'll see what it was).

Are you able to provide me with a text-based, .zip archive of the GT posts
from the dawn of time until the present?

Here's the os php KB I mentioned above:

It sounds pretty good though I haven't delved into the features in
detail yet, and I have no idea what php/etc. requirements Canonfire! currently has, if it would be compatible, etc., etc.

Thoughts?

We chatted quite a bit about the archive as well as a general new site architecture in the last greychat I attended, all of which sounded good....

Anything happening with this? Is the problem that the content itself is gone, or that there's just no suitable database solution to access it?

The loss of the GT archives is a great pity. I'd volunteer to get the project moving, if the content is still extant.

There is still a plan to put up the GT archive(among other things), but I think it is being shelved for now in preference of working on revamping the Canonfire! website. After that is done, other projects will commence.

There's been some continuing discussion about this on Greytalk itself, though not here. Has anyone discussed restoring the archive recently during Greychat??

It sounds like some folks could put together a partial archive of GT posts, in the event that we can't find the original Lotus Notes files from Morgan's site.

FWIW, Gary Holian has stated in the past that he has a complete archive of
emails sent to Greytalk over the years, so ideally we'd be able to start a non-
Lotus-Notes effort with the full history of the list.

Gary: care to comment?

Allan.

Greytalk Archive Blog

Hi all,

For those who have missed the Greytalk announcements, the Greytalk Archives are back -- kind of. Frustrated with waiting for anyone else to do anything, I started a blog that now has 20 classic posts from the Greytalk listserv, circa 1997-2000. Tracy Johnson has shared some of his old saved posts and three other people have volunteered to help me so far. Of course, 20 posts is a drop in the bucket compared to what the Archives should have, but I figure it's better than nothing and I will be expanding it all the time until better comes along.

Greytalk Archive 50th Post Milestone

Hi all,

After 7 weeks, the Greytalk Archive blog now has 50 recovered posts -- as much as the Greytalk listserv once had in one day in its heydey -- representing the first six years of the listserv, including some of its earliest messages from 1995! Thanks to Tracy Johnson and Phil Rhodes for helping so far.

100 Post Milestone!

Hi all,

The Greytalk Archives blog now has 100 posts from yesteryear! That includes Tom Hildrich's NPC dragons, Rip Van Wormer's thoughts on gods and their access to the Prime Material Plane, and Rob Kunt'z Robilar fiction!
