Dimensional Anchor effects vs...items, etc

Got into a discussion (happens frequently) recently that could have serious implications for a party. I won't say on which side of the argument I place my opinion, but here goes:

Check out the 4th level priest spell called "Dimensional Anchor" on page 171 of Player's Option: Spells & Magic. It states that it prevents the affected creature from any sort of dimensional travel so long as the spell is in effect (no save).

What if a Mirror of Life Trapping (see DMG for description) tries to 'suck in' a creature under the influence of the aforementioned spell?

One side argues it fails automatically since the Mirror is using a dimensional effect to imprison the target. The other claims the spell does not work.

If the Mirror does indeed fail, this would stand to reason that other magical items using dimensional effects would also be negated (ex: Hat of Devouring could not 'eat' the victim).

ideas? thoughts? opinions?

The spell mentions

"...that completely blocks bodily extradimensional travel. Forms of movement barred by the dimensional anchor include blinking, dimension door, etherealness, gate, phasing, plane shift, maze, shadow walk, teleportation, and similar spell-like or psionic abilities."

Those are some examples of what the spell affects, but is not a comprehensive list of all that it affects. Pay more attention to the part in bold print, which is the defining bit of the description. And if somebody is arguing an *effect* is totally different than an *ability*, they need to be smacked upside the head anyways. Razz As the mirror moves a victim into an extra-dimensional space (i.e. extra-dimensional travel), an individual which the spell has been cast on would not be moved into the mirror.

Same for a bag of devouring.

Additionally, a target of the spell couldn't climb into a portable hole or Leomund's Chest, or enter a Leomund's Tiny Hut, Mordenkainen's Magnificent Mansion, etc., as all of things things involve extra-dimensional movement, which the spell prohibits.

Glad you chimed in. Thankfully, the issue was resolved to the mutual satisfaction of both parties.

Would a person be able to reach into a Bag of Holding while under the influence of this spell? Would this effect nullify a "Deeppockets" spell?

"So, can I move partially into another dimension then?"

I think my answer would be "No". In this case, the bag or pocket is just a the standard bag/pocket, which doesn't allow ingress to the extra-dimensional space, just the real bag/pocket. In other words, I would treat dimensional anchor as if it were a very, very specific anti-magic effect with regard to the individual the spell was cast on, meaning the individual cannot interact even partially with any sort of extra-dimensional space/plane.

Agreed! Glad we are in synch. Maybe you should be worried... Wink
