Epic Koblolds

A recent thread about Kobolds as worthy opponents propmted this thread. The basis was that with planning, a little deviousness, and letting the monsters choose the battle field, low CR creatures could be much more powerful.

I think, that even with a great deal of tweaking, kobolds may not be up to the task of an epic level party. But who would be a substitute.

The Shadar Kai from Fiend Folio is the first that come to mind. Mind Flayers? Drow? Aboloeths? I like Aboleths.

Thoughts Anyone?

I like the shadar-kai, but there's also the great Gythianki described in that Invasion! series of Dragon and Dungeon mag (#100).

One race that would love to see more developed is the grimlock folk. Perhaps an UnderOerth adventure/campaign about some event/leader/power able to make them free from their ilithid thralls and establishing an underground kingdom could be interesting.
