Saurials in Greyhawk, oh my!

I have a slight thought. Where would you put saurials in Greyhawk? I was thinking of putting them in Hepmonaland. Although I'd like you to share your thoughts.

I'll tell you why later. Happy

I put Simians in Hepmonaland.
I would generally suggest putting them "beyond the Flanaess", but they work well enough in Hepmonaland or the Amedio.

As anthropomorphic dinosaurs, saurials are different from lizardfolk or dragonborn. They may fit well on the Isle of Dread, since canon already places dinosaurs there.

Looking at where other dinosaur offshoots (bonesnappers and dragonnels) are found in the Flanaess, I'm inclined to put saurials in the Pomarj and Lordship Isles.

In the Pomarj, they could be extinct now but still existed during the migrations. Their empire could have suffered losses from Tharizdun cultists and/or the Tarrasque (if you use Kuntz' sources on the Pomarj) or Earth Dragon cultists (if you prefer A series canon). Then the Suel fought them for their magic secrets and finally humanoid invasions after the Hateful Wars wiped them out. So now only ruins and artifacts still exist.

I like the Lordship Isles as a current placement for them because it's near the Sea Barons, where bonesnappers dwell, and Hepmonaland, where there could be many dinosaurs, while still being in the Flanaess proper. The Lordships Isles don't get enough love and saurials make the destination much more intriguing. Chris Pramas makes the Lordship Isles a very cosmopolitan place in his Freeport materials and it wouldn't be hard to add saurials to the mix.

I have that module, before I open it and read it; I'd like to ask one question. Is the Isle of Dread big enough for a sizeable saurial population?

Yes, but...

If you make their culture highly advanced with a high population, it is natural that they would have taken over the island and wiped out most other monstrous threats. Therefore, I advise a small, tribal population with low technological advancement.

P.S. I also like Vestcoat's Lordship of the Isles suggestion.

The Lordship of the Isles. I'll have to check my Greyhawk materials on them. I can make the Saurials a stone age culture for the Isle of Dread. However, I'm intrigued about the Lordship of the Isles. So, I guess you're right.

SirXaris and Vestcoat, can you give me a page either in the LGG or the Gold Box (or both, they aren't mentioned in Greyhawk: the Adventure Begins) about the Lordship of the Isles?

I can't give you a page number, but they are a chain of islands located between the Tivanot Peninsula and Hepmonaland. They were taken over by the Scarlet Brotherhood during the Greyhawk Wars.

Found them in the Living Greyhawk Gazetteer. Page 70 (luckily it was bookmarked on my PDF).

I think I can put saurials there, yeah. Might have to change the government, because saurial (and suel) paladins will chafe under that Neutral Evil type government. I'm sure Gary won't send the Pinkertons after me for making the change. I'm sure Wizards won't have a hissy fit either.

Note that the Living Greyhawk Gazateer describes the Lordship of the Isles after the Greyhawk Wars. At that time, the Scarlet Brotherhood had taken them over. Before the Greyhawk Wars, they were a free and independent nation. IIRC, the original majority alignment of the LotI was LN.

Well, I have a campaign planned to break the Scarlet Brotherhood's yoke on the Islands. That should work. Happy

Yes, the Lordship Isles had aligned with the Iron League before the wars. Chris Prama alludes to the Scarlet Brotherhood very obviously in his Freeport materials as the Brotherhood of the Yellow Sign.
